This actor was born on July 22, 1955 in Appleton, Wisconsin to a surgeon father and a nurse mother. During his time at Appleton High School, he began using the Dutch version of his birth name, which he adopted as his name going forward.

After graduating from Appleton High School, he attended University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee for 18 months before dropping out to join Milwaukee experimental theater company Theater X before moving to New York City in 1976.

He made his film debut in a small role in the 1980 Western Heaven’s Gate with Jeff Bridges, but most of his scenes were cut before release. He then went on to star in 1982’s The Loveless,.
