Even if tranfusions arent aviliable theres treatments that can slow down the symtopms of the diease and help patients not be in pain.
sickle cell can be treated by stem cell or bone marrow transfusions, but the procedures are rarely done due to the significant risks
The diease is estimated to appear 1 in 1000 births in people of hispanic desecent.
Red blood cells are responsible for carrying oxygen througout the body , so they are flexible and able to bend with the blood stream but, when a person has sickle cell anemia the deformed cells are not strong enough or flexible enough to hold the oxygen the body needs.
Sickle cell anemia is a group of inherited disorders that cause red blood cells to break down and deterioate.
What is sickle cell anemia?
Around 10% of African americans carry the Sickle cell gene. 1 in 500 births is the estimation of the appearance of the diease
