Kendrick Lamar's "Alright" ties into critical race theory (CRT) through its exploration of systemic racism, resilience, and the Black experience in America. The song highlights the difficulties Black people endure in an oppressive and discriminating society, which is in line with CRT's emphasis on the ways that social structures and legal frameworks support inequality.
learning objectives
- Students will define Critical Race Theory and understand the concept of "erasure" as discussed in Chapter 5.
- Students will analyze examples of earsure in history and contemporary society.
- Students will reflect on how erasure affects individuals and community identities.
What is Critical Race Theory?
CRT is an organized framework of legal analysis and intellectual and social movements that is based on the idea that racism is a socially constructed (culturally invented) characteristic that is used to oppress and take advantage of people of color rather than a natural, biologically grounded feature of physically distinct subgroups of humans. According to critical race theorists, racism is ingrained in American law and legal institutions to the extent that it serves to establish and uphold social, economic, and political inequities between whites and non-whites, particularly African Americans. Purpose: CRT was created to encourage individuals to think systemically rather than societally regarding racism. .
Interest Convergence
Key Concepts of CRT
White individuals will support racial justice only when it aligns with their interests.White individuals will support racial justice only when it aligns with their interest
Racism as Ordinary
. Racism is not an isolated incident but a common experience for people of color.
Intersectionally
Recognizes that individuals experience overlapping social identities (e.g., race, gender, class) that shape their experiences.
Social Construction of Race
Race is not a biological fact but a social construct that changes over time and context.
1970s
History of CRT
CRT emerged from legal scholarship as a response to perceived limitations of traditional civil rights approaches and the failure to address systemic racism.
Early scholars included Derrick Bell, Kimberlé Crenshaw, Richard Delgado, and Patricia Williams, who sought to challenge mainstream liberal legal approaches.
CRT was influenced by the CLS movement, which critiqued the law's neutrality and emphasized its role in perpetuating social hierarchies.
CRT introduced concepts such as intersectionality (coined by Crenshaw), the social construction of race, and the idea that racism is ingrained in the fabric of American society.
The first formal CRT conference was held in 1989 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, bringing together scholars to discuss and develop CRT's principles.
In the 1990s and 2000s, CRT began to influence disciplines beyond law, including education, sociology, and political science.
In the 2000s, CRT gained wider attention and sparked debates about race and inequality in the U.S., particularly in relation to affirmative action and policing.
In recent years, CRT has become a focal point in cultural and political debates, particularly regarding its teaching in schools and its interpretation in public policy discussions.
ERASURE
Definition: the act of systematically removing or suppressing a group's history, identity, and culture from collective memory, effectively making them invisible and marginalized within a narrative or historical record. Key Points: -Erasure can happen deliberately through biased historical accounts or unintentionally due to systemic biases in representation. -Erasure often occurs when the narratives of marginalized groups are omitted from mainstream media, which leads to a skewed understanding of history and identity. This concept is crucial for understanding intersectionality, as it highlights how different identities can be overlooked depending on societal norms and values. In the context of cultural appropriation, erasure plays a role when dominant cultures take elements from marginalized cultures while ignoring the struggles and contributions of those communities. Erasure can manifest in various forms, including the lack of diverse characters in film and television, or the absence of voices from certain racial or gender groups in public discourse.
Critical Race Theory in Education...
2000s: The application of CRT in education expanded, leading to the establishment of critical race pedagogy and influencing discussions around culturally relevant teaching and social justice in education.
Critical Race Theory (CRT) began to influence education in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
1990s: Scholars started applying CRT principles to educational issues, examining how race and racism affect schooling experiences, policies, and practices. Key figures like Gloria Ladson-Billings and William Tate published influential works that connected CRT to education.
Conferences and Publications: Various academic conferences and journals began to focus on CRT in education, fostering a community of scholars dedicated to exploring the intersections of race, law, and education.
1995: In her seminal article, "Toward a Critical Race Theory in Education," Gloria Ladson-Billings argued for the necessity of CRT as a framework for understanding the persistent inequalities in education.
