What are cells?

-Cells are the basic building blocks of all living things. -Cells have many parts that all have a different function. Each part performs certain tasks within the cell. These parts are called Organelles.

Hans and Zacharias Janssen develop the first compound microscope, enabling better observation of microscopic structures.

Robert Hooke observes empty cell compartments in cork tissue using a microscope and coins the term "cell".

1839

Robert Brown identifies the nucleus as a key component of plant cells.

1838

Matthias Schleiden proposes that all plants are made of cells.

Theodor Schwann states that all animals are made of cells, solidifying the basis of cell theory alongside Schleiden's work.
