January 30: CDC releases guidance for HIV testing during labor and delivery for patients with unknown status. Antiretroviral Therapy Program is launched in 13 countries.

2004

April 18: CDC announces "Advancing HIV Prevention" aimed to reduce transmission through increased testing and early treatment. Global Initiatives: $18 billion dollars released to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.

2003

President Bush announces $500million to prevent mother-to-child transmission in 14 African and Caribbean countries.

2002

CDC announces a new HIV Prevention Strategic Plan to cut annual HIV infections in the US by half. New classes of antiretroviral. drugs became available, improving treatment regimens.

2000

July: Congress authorizes $600 million in funding - enacting Global AIDS and TB Relief Act.

The CDC issues safeguards for the nation's blood supply. National and international response grows, and the U.S. government orchestrates massive public outreach.

August 6: CDC estimates 56,300 new HIV cases each year *US*. Congress reauthorizes and expands PEPFAR funding to $48billion.

October: CDC launches Prevention IS Care campaign to highlight the importance of staying on treatment.

September 22: CDC releases new testing recommendations, emphasizing the need for early detection. Annual screening for those at high risk.

January 21: CDC releases recommendations to prevent HIV after non-occupational exposure to the virus.

Global spread of HIV/AIDS, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, which would become the epicenter of the pandemic. International organizations like the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNAIDS were established to respond to the crisis, but there was a significant delay in providing care, especially in resource-limited countries.
