An ISDenver graduate with a bilingual IB high school diploma is unstoppable.

IB students earn an ~20% higher acceptance rate into Ivy League and other top universities compared to the general applicant pool (Crimson Ed USA, The Global College). This advantage is thanks to the comprehensive nature of the IB curriculum, which emphasizes critical thinking, interdisciplinary learning, and global awareness, all skills highly valued by top universities. Previous research has also found that International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) alumni enroll, attend, and graduate from college at higher rates than students who did not participate in the IB programme (Bergeron, 2015; Caspary, 2011; Halic, 2013).

Arts

  • Arts courses are designed to foster critical, reflective, and informed thinking with an emphasis on creativity.
  • ISDenver High School students can choose from courses in music, film, theatre, and visual arts tocontinue developing skills in personal expression with confidence and competence.

Cognitive Flexibility: Bilingual students demonstrate better problem-solving, multitasking, and critical thinking skills due to their ability to switch between languages and different modes of thinking. Improved Memory and Attention: Bilingual education strengthens memory and attention, as the brain becomes more adept at managing and processing information in multiple languages.

Individuals & Societies

  • Students complete one course in Individuals and Societies for their Diploma Programme and develop a critical appreciation of human experience and behaviour; the physical, economic and social environments that people inhabit and the history of social and cultural institutions.
  • ISDenver High School courses in this subject include Language and Culture as well as Global Politics, which is taught in French, Spanish, Chinese, or English.

Global Citizenship

In High School, this means more students becoming even more embedded in the change-making process, both locally and around the world. It includes deeply investigative and researched personal projects, more immersive experiences around the globe, and more service to our community and areas students are passionate about, to name a few.

Challenging Coursework: Pursuing a bilingual IB DP is academically demanding, as students must demonstrate high competency in both their native language and a second language, which can include studying multiple subjects in both languages. Preparedness for University: The academic rigor of the bilingual IB DP, combined with strong language skills, prepares students exceptionally well for higher education, particularly in international or linguistically diverse environments.

Inclusive Community

ISDenver is known for our community; our High School continues with this mission- and values-driven ethos, morphing curriculum into into real-life experiences with their fellow classmates, teachers, and families. Mentor programs, cultural celebrations, and events allow for our community to be an even larger representation of global cultures and belonging.

Language and Literature

  • Larger team sports are available via a CHSAA exemption to all students either through school partnerships or through their local high school.

Physical and Health Education

  • Sciences coursework aims to guide students to independently and collaboratively investigate issues through research, observation and experimentation by exploring the connections between science and everyday life.

Trips and Global Exchanges

  • Students will leverage their language and cultural comptency skills. At ISDenver HS, international travel is not a sightseeing excursion, but rather an opportunity to use their advanced language skills, gain deep culture awareness, and have real experiences where they can make a true impact as a global citizen.
  • In G9, students will travel domestically to expand their understanding of domestic and international government structures and processes.

  • Finally, in G11 and G12, during school breaks, domestic and international community Action & Service trips will be offered to fulfill the Diploma Programme's Community Action & Service (CAS) requirement.

DP Core: Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS)

  • Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) is a challenging, and enjoyable, journey of self-discovery for students. The CAS project challenges students to show initiative, demonstrate perseverance, and develop collaboration, problem solving, and decision making skills through creativity, activity, and service.
  • Each student has different goals and needs, but for many IBDP students, their CAS activities include experiences that are profound and life-changing.

Official IB Recognition: Students who complete the IB DP in two languages may be awarded a Bilingual IB Diploma, which is a prestigious recognition of their linguistic capabilities. This is an asset when applying to universities or international organizations.

MYP Personal Project

  • In Grade 10, ISDHS students have a unique opportunity to complete the Middle Years Programme, something not offered in public IB high schools in the Denver area. This includes completing the personal project, which formally assesses students’ approaches to learning skills for self-management, research, communication, critical and creative thinking, and collaboration.
  • The project consists of a process, a product, and a reflective report. The report is assessed by the student’s project supervisor and is also externally moderated by the IB to ensure a globally consistent standard of excellence.
  • Each project is awarded a final achievement grade. Examples of the personal project and one school’s reflection on the project can be found here.

DP Core: Theory of Knowledge

Theory of Knowledge (ToK) is a thoughtful and purposeful inquiry into different ways of knowing, and into different kinds of knowledge. The most central question in the course being “how do we know?”, ToK may be the most relevant course available for today’s young adults. The ToK course is assessed through an exhibition and a 1600 word essay.

Let's get some Data!

Immediate postsecondary enrollment of DP students compared to the US National Average

In 2013, 82.2% of all DP students enrolled in university immediately after high school. This compares favorably to the US national average for immediate enrollment of 66% (2013). DP candidates who received the diploma had the highest immediate enrollment rate (85.6%), followed by DP candidates (84.6%) and DP course students (79.7%) (figure 1).

Immediate enrollment of IB DP students by Institution type.

Additionally, the vast majority of DP students enrolled in four-year institutions (figure 2). The study found that 74.7% of DP students enrolled in four-year institutions and 7.4% enrolled in two-year institutions. As a comparison, about 40% of 2013 US high school graduates enrolled in four-year institutions and 26% enrolled in two-year institutions (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2014). In terms of institutional selectivity, a greater percentage of DP students enrolled in more-selective institutions (64.2%), compared to selective (27.4%) or inclusive institutions (5.5%).

Diploma Programme Requirements

  • The DP requires completion of the following 18-month courses. At least 3 of the courses must be taken at a higher level (HL) with a maximum of 4 HL courses taken. The remaining courses are taken at a standard level (SL).
