What impressions does the writer give you about certain character(s)? Do we learn about them through action, description or dialogue? Do any characters change? Are we party to a stream of consciousness (inner thoughts and feelings)? Does the writer reflect a dialect or accent which may tell us more about the time, place or character? Is there a protagonist ‘hero’ or an antagonist ‘villain’? Does the writer use a foil?
A character to contrast with another to draw attention to particular qualities/characteristics.
Perspectives
Are there different characters perspectives/viewpoints on events or do we only have one perspective? Is irony used?
A discrepancy between the expected state and how things really are.
Could be just irony or situational, dramatic or verbal irony. Situational – outcome of a situation is different to that expected Verbal – a person says one thing but means another Dramatic – the audience is given information that is denied to a character
Atmosphere
What type of atmosphere has the writer tried to convey? Which language features/sentence structure has the writer used to create a certain mood or tone? Does the description of the setting (time and place) set the tone or mood? How? Does the atmosphere or setting change? How?
