History
In 1947, MASP was founded by journalist and businessman Assis Chateaubriand with Italian art critic Pietro Maria Bardi. Chateaubriand, one of the media moguls in Brazil, wanted to build a museum that could bring international arts closer to Brazilian people. It´s first home was in the building of the Diários Associados, a publishing company owned by Chateaubriand, located on Rua 7 de Abril in downtown São Paulo.
Mission
The original mission was to bring both Brazilian and European art to public, making art education accessible to a wider audience. Bardi became the museum’s first director and held this role for several decades.
Key Contributions to Art and Culture
MASP play a crucial role in educating Brazilians about art history. It housed a school for arts and helped organize art exhibitions, workshops, and lectures. Over the years, it acquired significant works from Europe and Latin America, making its collection one of the most important in the Southern Hemisphere.
Peace and Concord
Peace and Concord
Its a remarkable painting by Pedro Américo, one of the most prominent 19th-century Brazilian artists. Pedro Américo was known for his academic style and his significant contributions to historical painting in Brazil, often reflecting themes of nationalism and moral ideals.
Story about the paintingn
In 1894, Pedro Américo, went on a trip, away from the political tensions that afected Brazil after the fall of the monarchy. During his trip, he encountered a scene that profoundly marked him: an older woman and a young girl sitting by the river. The woman, calm and serene, wove a crown of flowers, while the girl played in the water with laughing. They were not in conflict but in perfect harmony. It inspired Pedro to create "Peace and Concord." In the painting, the figure of Peace is a mature and wise woman, representing calm and reconciliation. Concord is younger, full of hope, symbolizing the future and unity.
