The History Of The Thames

As early as the 13th century, there were complaints about inadequate or dirty water supplies. In response, the City of London built the first organised water system in the city. It was a large pipe, known as a conduit, which carried fresh water from a spring in the countryside near modern-day Marble Arch, via Charing Cross, Leicester Square, along the Strand, Fleet Street and Cheapside, finally arriving in Poultry. The first pipe, later known as the ‘Great Conduit’, began construction in 1245: it was 2.7 miles long, and comprised of hollowed-out tree trunks and lead pipes. The River Fleet, despite once being pictured as London’s answer to Venetian canals, became known as the Fleet Ditch. It was eventually covered over and became part of the sewage overflow system, its mouth sometimes visible under the north side of Blackfriars Bridge. It was describes as:

  • Sweepings from Butchers Stalls, Dung, Guts and Blood,
  • Drown’d Puppies, stinking Sprats, all drench’d in Mud,
  • Dead Cats and Turnip-Tops come tumbling down the Flood.

The ThamesTideaway Tunnel

The Thames Tideway Tunnel has been designed to effectively reduce waste in the River Thames, which scientists have estimated that 94,000 microplastics per second flow down The River Thames. So its essential for it for it to be cleaned as it the main source of water in houses in England. It used for many such as: drinking water, defense, trade routes, farming, fishing, milling, trade, providing water for London, serving as a major trade route, and sewage removal. The Thame in the past was resident to all kinds of diseases which why it has a muddy complexion.

London's combined sewage system handles human waste and rain runoff together, but the capital's population has outgrown the infrastructure. Raw sewage under normal conditions goes to wastewater treatment plants but currently, even a small amount of drizzle in London can overwhelm the network, triggering overflows into the Thames. The new super sewer will mean that instead of flowing into the river, almost all sewage overflows in the centre of London will be stored in the tunnel until it can be processed.

Survey Results For The Form

The results from my survey i found majority of year 9 consumes tap water, which comes from the Thames. The majority of people who choosed tap water put its level of purity at a four. Despite the Thames not looking like it, it is one of the most cleanest rivers in the world. In fact majority of the cities in England get their water suppllied from The Thames. But in the future this my change.
