Why this design?

Content Area and Grade Level

This text set is intended for an 8th grade science classroom. I have created this text set for a content area teacher who would like their students to explore pioneers of science throughout history. In this collection, students will be exposed to diverse individuals, some of which were almost forgotten or not orginally credited for the work that they had done.

I chose to create a site using Genially because of the sites interactivity capabilities. Through this site, students will have the freedom to explore pre-selected, appropriate materials. Students who use this site will be engaged in several interactive features, such as, push buttons, links to websites, as well as videos.

Text Types and Accessibility

YALSA Connections

This text set contains the biographies of people who were contributors to their field of science. Some of the books are chunked into smaller biographies, making it easier for those students who may become overwhelmed with large texts. Most of the texts are picture heavy, and one is a graphic novel in order to help support the reader's comprehension. The Fossil Hunter is a picture book with content most appropriate for intermediate students. Finally, I have included an ebook version of A Shot in the Arm, so that students can access it from home.

YALSA states that, a YA librarian must have an, "understanding of the diversity among teens and an appreciation of the information needs of teens from various cultural and ethnic backgrounds" (YALSA, 2009). Therefore, I have carefully selected texts that display diverse scientists in the areas of race, gender, class, and LGBTQ+ communities.
