Best Practices for Tutoring Emergent Bilingual Learners
Provide Comprehensible Input:
Teacher’s use of gestures, pictures, demonstrations, etc. to facilitate comprehension is critical (Ortiz & Yates). * Build vocabulary through activities such as interactive word walls using visuals, personal dictionaries, interactive notebooks, etc. Utilize visual, auditory, and kinesthetic strategies such as incorporating manipulatives, gestures, and tasks with visuals attached. Teach Peer-Assisted Learning Strategies (PALS) such as Paragraph Shrinking and Partner Reading. Provide opportunities for clarification in the native language (either with an adult or peer), if possible, along with the use of native language materials.
