PART II Visual Representation

Allow students to express thier cncerns with both teachers and parents. As a teacher, it is important to check in with students - ask students "How do you learn best?" If a child needs to move around, allow them to. Provide flexible seating and a diverse activities to promote differnt learning styles.
Students should be praised for using their voices; even for the smallest of activities. When teaching children to advocate for thmselves, it is important as the educator to first model that behavior. This also helps a child to feel confident.
VValue students emotions; create a safe and inclusive learning environment where students are able to express thier feelings wihtout shame. Students should feel a sense of belonging.

Self Advocating

How do you teach a child to self advocate?

One of the main barriers that makes school harder for students with disabilities is stereotyping. Sometimes students (and even teachers) act as bullies. Teachers may indirectly discourage students with disabilities. Other barriers may include the accommodation process; sometimes schools or teachers fail to fully accommodate a student or fulfill requirements/specual requests (in addition to a lack of accessibilty for students with phsycial disabilities). There may also be a lack of knowledge or awareness of disabilities.

What makes shcool harder for students with disabilities?

Accomodations

1. Allowing students to move throughout the day. 2. Break down directions; keep directions short and simple. 3. Be patient, allow students the time they need to complete assignments. 4. Do not "punish" children - do not take away recess.

Promote and Advocate for Students

"My brain may be different than yours, but it is still amazing." When a student is able self advocate, they are able to inform parents or teachers what they need (what their brain needs) in order to best learn. If a child learns in a manner that is different than how their teacher is forcing them to learn, it makes learning difficult for theh child. In this case, a child may be unable to retain infromation and be unsuccessful inside the classroom. It is vital for children to learn to use their voices and to advocate for themselves and their educaiton.

"THIS IS WHAT MY BRAIN NEEDS."

Three possible strategies for students with learning disabilities (or who need accommodations) include: 1. Providing sentence starters for students who may have ADHD, dyslexia, dyspracis, and dysgraphia. THis allows students to write more efficently as well as learn how to verbally communicate with peers, teachers and parents. 2. Promoting self advocacy and assisting students in learning to or assisting in advocating for themselves. 3. Allow students to make their own decisions when it comes to their education - especially those in high school or college.
