WHERE THE CHEETAH INHIBITS

  • Less than 7000 cheetahs remain in the world with only a popluation of 4300 cheetahs in South Africa alone
  • 21% of cheetahs live in protected areas

HOW MANY ARE REMAINING

  • The number of cheetahs in captivity is soaring in America
  • They are kept in around 80 different facilities, but there has been a concern for the similarity to the lion breeding industry
  • In captivity they are fed 3-3.5 pounds of ground beef a day inculding frozen rabbits and beef femurs
  • in captivity cheetahs live to about 17-20 years whereas in the wild they live to 10-12 years old
  • male cheetahs live to about 8 years old in the wild

HOW MANY CHEETAHS ARE IN CAPTIVITY

  • human wildlife conflicts, 90% of cheetahs actually live outside protected managedment areas meaning that they are living alongisde human community such as farming communitys which are trying to raise cows and sheeps

Cheetahs are going endangered by:

  • Climate change
  • Hunting by humans
  • Habitat destruction
  • illegal trading, which is driven by the demand for the exotic pets in the middle east
  • low levels of genetic variation

WHY CHEETAHS ARE ENDAGERED

WHAT CHARITIES AND ORGANISATIONS ARE HELPING TO SAVE THE SPECIES

  • The cheetah conveservation fund is a charity that hopes by helping cheetahs that they will one day get to see them thrive and flourish while co-exsiting with people with a proctective environment
  • Cheetahs are carnivores that eat small antelopes
  • they often hunt in the late afternoons and late evenings as they relay on their sight
  • they usually creep within 100 meters of their intended victim before they finally pounce
  • they suficate their prey by clamping down on its windpipe
  • its jaw can create a vice like grip
  • cheetahs eat quickly as they can be bullied away from their kill by the likes of lions or hyenas, they lose 50% of their food this way
  • they are clean eaters and dont return back to their kill and leave the bones of their prey
  • cheetahs spend most of their time sleeping as they are least active during the day
  • they also prefer staying under shaded spots under trees

DIET, LIFESTYLE AND HABITAT

  • Cheetahs are the fastest land animals on earth
  • they have around 2000 spots on their coat
  • they use their coats as a camoflague
  • they can survive up to 10 days without water
  • cheetahs get enough blood from their prey so this ensures that they dont need water for days
  • cheetahs also drink their preys urine that is still in the animal
