Il catastrofismo è una teoria scientifica che sostiene che i cambiamenti geologici e biologici sulla Terra avvengano attraverso eventi catastrofici improvvisi, come terremoti o eruzioni vulcaniche. Fu proposto inizialmente da Georges Cuvier nel XIX secolo, in contrapposizione all'idea di cambiamenti lenti e graduali.

Il fissismo è una teoria secondo cui le specie viventi sono immutabili nel tempo, cioè non evolvono e rimangono esattamente come furono create. È stata sostenuta da correnti filosofiche e religiose prima delle teorie evolutive di Darwin.

Il gradualismo è una teoria evolutiva che dice che i cambiamenti nelle specie avvengano in modo lento e progressivo, attraverso piccole variazioni accumulate nel tempo. È stata sviluppata da Charles Darwin per spiegare l'evoluzione come un processo continuo, in contrasto con teorie che ipotizzano cambiamenti rapidi o improvvisi.
