Introduction

ROYAL GUARDS

Elite soldiers have been protecting the British monarch since the reign of Henry VII.

The Guards Regiments were originally formed to serve as personal bodyguards for the Sovereign, with the first units raised in 1656 to safeguard the exiled King Charles II.

The Changing the Guard ceremony was initially held at the Palace of Whitehall, the official London residence of the Sovereign until 1698.

Currently, the main Changing the Guard ceremony takes place at Buckingham Palace.

YEOMEN WARDERS

The Yeoman Warders originally belonged to the Yeoman of the Guard, the monarch’s elite bodyguards who accompanied the king or queen everywhere. During Henry VIII's reign, a portion of the royal bodyguard was assigned to protect the Tower of London.

Historically, the Yeoman Warders were exclusively male, but in 2007, Moira Cameron became the first woman to join their ranks. Since then, more women have been appointed.

As mentioned, both groups wear distinctive uniforms. The Yeomen of the Guard wear the traditional Tudor-style red and gold, while the Yeoman Warders' state dress has similar origins but is worn only on formal occasions at the Tower.
