Routine Testing: In the Office
- Now that you’ve taken Charlie’s vital signs, it’s time to continue her physical exam
Focus on the Physical
- Components of the exam depends on the patient’s chief complaint, medical history, age, sex, etc.
- Will consist of:
- Looking
- Listening
- Palpating
Engage in the Exam
- Begin step 1
- Open up “Look”
- Review & take notes on how to perform a visual inspection of the eyes, ears, nose, throat, and skin as part of a physical exam.
- On the handout provided, complete the “Look and diagnose” section
Your Turn - Look
- Begin step 1
- Open up “Listen”
- Review & take notes on how to perform auscultation on the heart and lungs
- Listen to your partner’s heart and lungs & record information on your handout

- Complete step 2
- Research a simple assessment used to assess one of the functions (in the table).
- Describe the assessment (on the handout)
- Complete step 3
- Review your notes about routine exams as well as the medical history and vital signs of your patient Charlie Nowak. Given what you know about the patient, decide which two components of the physical exam you feel will be most important to assessing and maintaining the health of your patient. Defend your choices on the handout provided.
