Although the saxophone is made out of brass it is actually a member of the woodwind family. This is because the player blows into a mouthpiece that has a single reed attached to it (like a clarinet) to produce a sound. They also change notes by covering and uncovering holes drilled into the body of the instrument. This means that they belong to the woodwind family.

Brass players have to buzz their lips in the mouthpiece - this causes the vibration which makes the sound.
