What is a Digital Footprint?

a digital footprint is data about a person thats been collected from the activities online like browsing history, app use and emails, there are also two types of digital footprints that are:

  • search your name up on google and see if your socials or personal information pop up
  • give yourself google privacy and security
  • check social media and cookies on chrome

How to know if data is tracked

Passive footprints which is data left unintetionally, is collected through monitoring tied to your IP address as cookies and permissions are installed on websites without warning here are a few points to see if you are tracked:

  • Audit your account - audit accounts you may have forgotten over time like for gaming, social etc
  • Deactivate and delete accounts - some can be easy to remember to delete if you are not using them like old accounts
  • Doing a google search - searching up your name and seeing something you might not like and you can ask google to remove it using Google Help Centre.

To clean up your digital footprint you might need to:

  • Use a VPN - VPN's can hide your IP address and encrypt your network, you can also select a region which can bring many benefits
  • Use private browsing - using incognito mode to reduce data use
  • Delete cookies - deleting cookies can help reduce tracking
  • Seting up privacy and security - setting security and privacy on some social media can help with things you share online
