NEXT PAGE
Byron frequently used satire and lyricism, creating complex and tormented characters, such as the famous "Byronic hero".The Byronic hero is a archetype; the main characteristics of the Byronic hero include: Nostalgia and melancholy: Often feels alienated and misunderstood, bringing with it a sense of sadness and a search for identity. Rebellion: He is a rebel against social and moral conventions, challenging authority and expectations. Genius and Talent: He has exceptional intelligence and talent, but is also often tormented and unhappy. Passion: His relationships are intense and often tragic, reflecting an ardent but doomed love. Ambiguous Heroism: He's not a traditional hero; his actions can be morally ambiguous and do not always lead to positive outcomes. Examples of Byronic heroes can be found in works such as "Childe Harold" and "Manfred", where these characters embody the complexity of the human soul and the tensions of the Romantic era. His most famous works, such as "Childe Harold's Pilgrimage" and "Don Juan", also highlight a strong sense of adventure and biting irony.

The speaker spends the lines celebrating the beauty of one woman. He compares her beauty to the night rather than the day (The darkness of the word ‘night’ seems to be a reference to the Greek ideal, the beauty that is so strong that it could be almost catastrophic). The speaker describes different aspects of the woman, like her hair and skin. She is the image of peaceful beauty.

1) Right from the start, Byron sets the tone of the poem with a comparison that seems almost divine, her beauty does not seem purely physical, either; instead, it is almost an aura, a shield of beauty, unaware and almost innocent in its unawareness.2) The poet goes on in the second stanza to compare and contrast different aspects of beauty: her dark hair and her white face, which the light hits, seem to recall images of the Virgin Mary (associations with the divine). She reconciles dark and light together, appearing both glowing and also shrouded in darkness. One could make the association that the darkness that surrounds her, given that Byron met Mrs. Wilmont at a funeral.3)Unlike the day, the night is devoid of people, devoid of clouds, and quiet. It is when things rest. She is not warped by her beauty, and she exists in a world that is, to Byron, peaceful…her heart is innocent, her mind clear.
