What are the Oscars

• The Oscars are also known as "The Academy Awards";
• They are awarded annually by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS);
• The first presentation of these awards took place on May 16, 1929, at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, and has since served as inspiration for other awards;

History of the Oscars

• The idea for the Oscar came about at a meeting between members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, led by studio director Louis B. Mayer.
• The objective was to create an organization that would promote excellence in the film industry and that would also help improve its image;

• The first Oscar ceremony was held at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, on May 16, 1929. That night, 12 golden statuettes were awarded, with categories covering acting, direction, screenplay and production;

• Over the years, the Oscars have evolved and adapted to changes in the film industry. New categories were added reflecting the diversity of productions and the internationalization of cinema.

Since 2002, the ceremony has taken place at the Dolby Theater, in Los Angeles, in the United States. Every year, millions of viewers watch the Oscar ceremony around the world.
