Update from the Head
Last week ended with a visit from our OAs and a golf tournament. It was lovely to see the different generations together. The highlight of last weekend for most students was the Tug of War, which always brings out the best of House rivalries, while the many photos capture the fun and enjoyment friendly competition can bring. As our teams prepare for another weekend of sports, congratulations and good luck go to our Girls U14 Hockey team, who won the county finals this week. They go on to represent North Yorkshire next Tuesday in Leeds. Not wanting to be outdone, our Equestrian team, competing at Northallerton, also qualified for the NSEA National Championships at Addington.

Message from Mrs Dent
This week has seen us get back into full swing after returning from Exeat last week. The inter-house Tug-O-War was great fun and, what we lacked in tugging technique, the girls certainly made up for in spirit. Sunday evening saw Years 10,11 and 13 in the house take part in the sacrament of reconciliation in the Abbey Crypt. The girls have been forging ahead with their academic studies and activities and enjoying a little bit of Autumn sunshine during the day - even as the hot water bottles are beginning to make an appearance in the evenings. Congratulations go to Aidan's members of the school NSEA team: Poppy, Edie, Connie and Emma, who did wonderfully representing the house and school in Northallerton last weekend. We're looking forward to catching up with Year 13 parents this weekend as they attend parent-teacher meetings and enjoy time here in the valley with us. Wishing you all a wonderful weekend and week ahead.

Focussing on our values..
We're also sharing daily suggestions from the 'action for happiness' project's Optimistic October calendar.
Continuing with our retreat theme of last year, we are reflecting on our personal values, thinking about what matters most to us individually and as a community. Each day between now and the end of term, will see a refection on one personal value and the ways in which we can bring this into our lives.
Biology Field Trip..
Tuja, Tiffany, Calypso, Yasmin and Dora have been spending 3 days in the beautiful Lake District at the Field Studies Council's Blencathra centre. They've been waking up to these incredible views and getting some practical Biology field work experience as part of their A level.

A reminder that if you'd like to keep up with the goings on of the House and girls, then do find us on social media. Please do also feel free to drop me line with news or pictures of interesting or note-worthy things the girls have been up to in the holidays. It's always nice to share their experience more widely on these pages to celebrate the many gifts and achievements of the girls.
Dear Parents, We have had a busy week of assessments and school trips out. Notably our Girls led Wednesday evening's political and religious debate, with Meg and Hannah shining out as keen academics. Anastasia Wu was awarded first prize for Ampleforth College in the Royal Society of Chemistry Schools' Analyst Competition. Mrs Cook has taken Yr 11's on a Geography field trip, while Dr Beveridge took our Yr 13 Biologists away. We all enjoyed the Tug of War last Sunday and are looking forward to seeing some of our Yr 13 parents this weekend. Girls have consolidated their hockey prowess with some exciting wins this week, while badminton and fitness are firm favorites with some other students. We have started October with daily Rosary in honour of the greatest of role models for our girls, Our Lady. Warmest regards, Charmaine

A Busy Time..
A full week in many ways, due to end with the Year 13 parent conferences tomorrow. The boys have been in good spirits, committing to school life as only they can. The week started well with fixtures, socials and a fun tug of war on Sunday. The week has seen an increased academic pressure as we move towards assessments and grades for the boys and the 53 positive Ampleforth Points in 4 days shows that the boys have been performing admirably.
I am reminded as I see the newer pupils arriving back from the range, or heading out for rehearsals for our next production, or checking team sheets, gathering books up or just playing ping pong, what a busy and fulfilling community we are. What a breadth of opportunity that the boys can access. We are so very fortunate and I am proud of the manner in which the boys utilise these opportunities.
As the nights grow darker, I am reminded we are moving towards one of the most important dates of the year, the House Retreat. Reintroduction of Lectio, the continued Deanery sessions and recent Reconciliation show that we continue to support and develop the spiritual growth of our boys. That they are encouraged to reflect and be grateful for all that they have. Gratitude was the focus of last year’s house retreat and this year it will be Friendship. Again, as I plan the retreat, I am reminded what a wonderful opportunity being at Ampleforth affords our boys.
I wish you all a good week, look forward to seeing the Year 13 parents this weekend and catching up with you all as the term continues apace.

The first full week for some time - and what a full week it was! There were some personal triumphs and a very bitter defeat. The weather has also not been very kind up here in North Yorkshire, and a lot of socialising is taking place in house rather than outside. At least, there is life in the house - and quite a bit of mess! The chickens continue to settle and have moved into their new abode. Head Chicken Monitor Eddie is doing a stellar job!

Dear Parents, The pupils have been fully back in the swing of things this last week. So much has gone on. There were terrific performances by both of our teams in the House Tug of War. It was great to see the camaraderie of all of the houses at this whole school event. We had a packed boarding house again for Friday night fun and my thanks, as ever, to the staff for laying on such super activities and games. Hopefully, you'll get a good feel for them in the photos that follow.
We have started the House Band practices and had the first rehearsals of the Junior Schola. These are generally during the day at lunch breaks. but there will also be an additonal one on Thursdays from 6.30pm to 7.15pm.
There has been a lot of activity in the kitchen and we will be having an internal house baking competition next week to determine the team that we will enter in the House Bake-Off. If you have any amazing recipes you would like to be given a go, please let your child know and we can assist them in making them. Well done to the boys who triumphed at the St Peter's Rugby Festival. The Year 8s remained unbeaten and the Year 7s were not far behind! The girls continue to demonstrate their fantastic hockey skills with some competitive matches with Bradford and St Peter's. The most impressive achievement of the week was that of Willow and Agnes, who played in the U14 side that won the North Yorkshire Cup. Good luck girls in the next round on Tuesday! Sebastian Phillips

Dear Parents and Guardians, Tug o' War was a big hit and, although we finished 3rd, the House camaraderie was very strong. This week the House has embarked on another challenge: to run 50 miles for the month of October.
