Hubble was born in the town of Marshfield, Missouri, on November 20, 1889. In 1900, the family moved to Wheaton, Illinois. In his youth, Hubble was known more for his athletic talents, even though he had good grades in almost every subject at school. Hubble married Grace Lillian Lei but he had no children
BIOGRAPHY
Topics
Hubble provided evidence that a galaxy's speed increases with its distance from Earth, a property now known as "Hubble's law." The Hubble–Lemaître Law implies that the universe is expanding. Hubble can also be considered the father of the big theory, as through his studies the theory proposed by Lemaître was confirmed.
DISCOVERIES
Topics
Edwin Hubble's name is easily recognized because of the Hubble Space Telescope, put into orbit in 1990, to study space without the distortions caused by the atmosphere.
Hubble was an athlete, playing baseball, football and running track at school and college. In basketball, he played in several positions. In 1907, he captained the University of Chicago basketball team and broke the Illinois state high jump record.
Hubble worked for the Army in Maryland during World War II as chief of the ballistics division of the special ballistics research laboratory.
CURIOSITIES
Topics
Edwin Hubble was an important astronomer who changed the way we understand the universe. He discovered that galaxies are moving away from each other, which led to the idea that the universe is expanding, known as Hubble's Law. This discovery helped support the Big Bang theory. Furthermore, Hubble created a system for classifying galaxies, which we still use today. His work helped us see the cosmos in a completely new way.
