Visual content is a transversal, universal language, like music. We are capable of understanding images from millions of years ago, even from other cultures. We don't like to bore. We don't want to be repetitive. Communicating as always bores and doesn't engage. We do it differently. We sabotage boredom. We create what the brain likes to consume because it stimulates it.

Visual content is a cross-cutting, universal language, like music. We are capable of understanding images from millions of years ago, even from other cultures. We don't like to bore. We don't want to be repetitive. Communicating as usual is boring and doesn't hook. We do it differently. We sabotage boredom. We create what the brain likes to consume because it stimulates it.

With Genially's templates, you can include visual resources to leave your audience amazed. You can also highlight a specific phrase or data that will be etched in your audience's memory, and even embed external content that surprises: videos, photos, audios... Whatever you want!

Key characteristics & activities
Institute Day
Usually involves a "dog and pony show" where teachers listen to a presentation. It often includes a variety of options where teachers can select single or multiple sessions to attend. Activities are mainly centered around listening to a presentation.
Effectiveness
Institute Day
We know that this is the least effective way to engage teachers in professional development. While having a variety of options available to teachers is important, it is the way the content is presented which is ineffective (direct instruction). This method has not been effective at my school district as they do not provide institute or professional development days anymore.
Advantages
Institute Day
Can create groups for various interests for additional professional development. When teachers are able to select the sessions, a cohort is formed for potential future PD surrounding the same topic.
Disadvantages
Institute Day
The direct instruction model of presenting information to teachers is less effective than engaging them in collaborative learning. This institute day model, when given as sessions with lectures, is often the least engaging for teachers.
Key characteristics & activities
Communities of Learners
Collaborative teams work together and are organized into grade levels, departments, and data teams. Smaller groups can collaborate to address areas of need and develop instructional strategies that will be most effective for their community. Activities in the groups include planning, book studies, examination of student work, and interventions.
Effectiveness
Communities of Learners
This is most frequently seen in professional learning today. When teachers work together toward a common interest, solutions are found to address their concerns. This professional learning is very common and effective at my school district as we have a weekly collaborative period, with each week focusing on a different topic.
Advantages
Communities of Learners
When teachers can engage in collaborative practices, they often address urgent and real concerns. This results in self-directed professional development and is one way to create effective and real change in schools.
Disadvantages
Communities of Learners
Since collaborative teams often lead to self-direction, this results in less guidance or feedback being provided to the learning communities. When teachers implement strategies, there is no designated person who is a specialist within the topic area to provide feedback or guidance to teachers.
Key characteristics & activities
Individualized PD
Each staff member must plan their professional development for the year. There is often a required number of hours or sessions. Some activities include traditional workshops, graduate classes, classroom research and mentoring.
Effectiveness
Individualized PD
This is considered an effective method because each individual can tailor PD choices to their interests and needs. This often results in professional growth, especially when supervisors suggest areas of growth for the educator. In my disrrict this method is used for new teachers and veteran teachers who may need more support.
Advantages
Individualized PD
This path is customizable to each staff member's career path and needs. It allows for rigor in addition to the choice of learning modality (graduate classes, workshops, webinars, etc.).
Disadvantages
Individualized PD
It puts responsibility on the teacher, adding yet another thing to the already full plate of the career of teachers. Collaboration opportunities are not guaranteed unless the facilitator of the professional development incorporates them into their session.
Key characteristics & activities
Remote PD
Online broadcasting to a space, not a webinar. The idea is that the presentation and professional development would be the same if the person were physically in the room. They lead and guide the session from a different location. Designated individuals on-site encourage and facilitate interactions and conversations when appropriate.
Effectiveness
Remote PD
More effective when there is an individual present in the room to help facilitate and monitor the technology, ensuring the presenter is connected to the learning space. This method has been effective in the past at my school site, although it is not frequently utilized.
Advantages
Remote PD
This allows additional specialists and professionals to bring their expertise to a set of staff members without the additional expense of travel. It also allows for a large audience as you could have multiple school sites with all members attending logged into the session at the same time.
Disadvantages
Remote PD
Teachers want strategies that can be applied to their classroom immediately, and being able to model a strategy is a really effective way to teach it. However, remote session presenters need a presentation that is not just direct instruction to ensure they plan for collaboration and questions during the session in order to engage teachers.
Key characteristics & activities
Districtwide PD Plan
It involves multiple days over a longer period of time. This method is used to introduce faculty to new and innovative ideas. To be excellent, districtwide PD activities should be job-embedded, sustained over time, and include practice and coaching.
Effectiveness
Districtwide PD Plan
It is not typically seen as effective, as it is often referred to as the "spray and pray" method. This method allows districts to say that they trained everyone in a specific topic but does not ensure that teachers are adequately equipped to implement the strategies. This has not been effective in my school district, as teachers often complain about the methods used during whole-district PD and lack opportunities for collaboration and reflection.
Advantages
Districtwide PD Plan
This method allows for important and innovative information to be provided quickly and efficiently, as everyone receives the information at once. Districtwide professional development can benefit all students when job-embedded and equipped with coaching and feedback.
Disadvantages
Districtwide PD Plan
Often, it is not sufficient when practice and coaching are missing. Typically, it is presented in a way that lacks engaging strategies for teachers, for example, providing a list of ideas but then requiring teachers to spend additional time planning in order to implement them. This leaves teachers discouraged and needing feedback and coaching.
