GETTING STARTED

In Career Planning 10, learners will begin by reviewing their career portfolio. Next, they will work on creating a request for a letter of recommendation and complete a job application. Each will be an artifact to include in a digital or physical career portfolio. Afterward, learners will discover the career skills that are important for retention and advancement. The course will conclude with learners working on a career plan to take with them as they progress through high school.

lesson 1.1.1: Career portfolio

A career portfolio is a collection of materials that document your educational performance, career exploration, and employment experiences over time (if any). In your CCA Career Planning courses, you will have the opportunity to create a Career Portfolio. This Career Portfolio will go through three stages:

  • process portfolios
  • assessment portfolios
  • showcase portfolios

Introduction

Stage 1: Process Portfolios

Stage 2: Assessment Portfolios

Stage 3: Showcase Portfolios

lesson 1.1.1: Career portfolio

You can use your CCA Career Portfolio as you begin working on documents that you will need for future employment. These documents include:

  • a resume
  • a job application
  • letter of introduction
  • letter of recommendation
  • letter of appreciation
  • request for letter of recommendation

Physical Portfolio

A physical Career Portfolio means you will print out all of the artifacts you create and place them into a folder. This folder should be kept in a safe place as you will want to find these documents later when you are preparing for a job. The drawback to creating a physical Career Portfolio is that it is not easy to update items inside it.

Digital Portfolio

A digital Career Portfolio means you are keeping all of your artifacts saved in a folder on a computer. CCA recommends that you save items to OneDrive so you do not lose them if your computer crashes. The drawback to having a digital portfolio is that you might not have physical copies of your work to show future employers if needed.

lesson 1.1.1: Career portfolio

For your Career Planning courses, you will use OneDrive to save all your Career Portfolio artifacts. This lesson will teach you about OneDrive, a cloud storage service that backs up your files online. You can create a folder in your OneDrive in four steps:

  • open OneDrive
  • look for OneDrive—Commonwealth Charter Academy
  • create a folder
  • rename the folder

lesson 1.1.1: Career portfolio

Step 1: open OneDrive To open OneDrive, navigate to the File Explorer icon in the lower left-hand corner of your screen. The icon looks like a tabbed manila folder in a folder stand. Double left-click on the icon to open File Explorer.

Step 2: look for OneDrive—Commonwealth Charter Academy On the left side of the File Explorer, select OneDrive with a single left click. Once OneDrive is opened, you may see files listed on the right side of the File Explorer. Files will be present if you have used OneDrive before. If not, the right side will be empty.

Step 3: Create a Folder Navigate to the "New folder" icon on the ribbon, located within the "Home" tab. Select it with a single left click.

Step 4: Rename the Folder Upon clicking "New folder," a rectangle will appear with highlighted text on the right side of the File Explorer. Erase the default text and type the intended folder name. Press ENTER on the keyboard to finish the command. Be sure to use proper capitalization and spelling.

Review Time!

A process portfolio is a “work in progress.” When you use this type of portfolio, you will update it to reflect new skills and information. A process portfolio emphasizes the steps and decision-making process of your showcase portfolio. Your Career Planning Portfolio will start as a process portfolio. You will add and update items to the portfolio each year to reflect the new skills that you learn.

Educators often use an assessment portfolio in schools. You use this type of portfolio to demonstrate what you have learned. It is a compilation of work samples, assessments, projects, and reflections that showcase your abilities. Your Career Planning Portfolio will become an assessment portfolio. When you finish Career Planning 12, your portfolio will contain samples of important career-related documents to demonstrate what you have learned.

A showcase portfolio is a portfolio that only contains examples of your best work. Although you can update this type of portfolio, you will only include finished items. People use a showcase portfolio for professional purposes like job applications and college admissions. Eventually, your Career Planning Portfolio will be a showcase portfolio. It will contain the best examples of your work and completed documents you can use when searching for employment. As you gain experience, you will update and use this portfolio to support your future job endeavors.
