1958 : premier Modem, transmet des données par réseau téléphonique

29 octobre 1969 : premier message internet envoyé entre les laboratoires informatiques d'UCLA et de Standford (USA)

1982 : protocoles SMTP (pour les emails) et DNS (pour les ites internets) (SMTP définit des règles de communication entre serveurs informatiques, DNS converti l'adresse d'un site internet en une adresse IP)
1974 : protocole TCP/IP qui permet aux ordinateurs et autres appareils d’envoyer et de recevoir des données (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol)
1971 : premier logiciel d'envois de courriers electroniques par Ray Tomlinson via ARPANET
