The Declaration of Independence begins with an important introduction that explains why the colonies wanted to break away from British rule. The writers, known as the Founding Fathers, believed that people should have the right to choose their own government. This introduction is important because it sets the stage for the main reasons the colonies felt they needed to declare independence. In the preamble, the document states that all men are created equal and are given certain unalienable rights. "Unalienable rights" are special rights that cannot be taken away. These rights include life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, which means that everyone should have the freedom to live their life as they choose, as long as they do not hurt others. The Founding Fathers believed that these rights are a part of being human and that they come from nature or a higher power, not from any government. This idea was a big deal at the time because it highlighted that everyone deserves basic rights and freedoms simply because they are alive. By including these ideas in the Declaration, the Founding Fathers wanted to inspire the colonists and make it clear that they were fighting for something much bigger than just independence from Britain; they were fighting for the rights of all people.

A grievance is a complaint or a feeling of being wronged. The document lists several grievances that explain why the colonies wanted to break free from Great Britain. The colonists were unhappy about several things. First, they were upset about taxes that were forced on them without their consent. They felt it was unfair to pay taxes to a government that did not allow them to have a say in how those taxes were used. Second, British soldiers were often forced to live in colonists' homes, which made the people feel uncomfortable and violated their privacy. A third grievance was related to mercantilism, a system where the colonies were expected to trade only with Britain and were not allowed to sell their goods to other countries. This limited their economic freedom and growth. Lastly, the colonists were frustrated with the way colonial governments were controlled by the British Crown, which made decisions without considering the needs and wants of the colonists. These grievances helped fuel the desire for independence and led to the fight for freedom from British control.
