What is Project-Based Learning?
- A form of effective instructional approach where students are encouraged to work on tasks within a content area through solving relevant real life issues for an extended period of time
- Distinct from direct teaching
- The teacher is a guide
- Students are able to learn in groups, improve their inquiry skills, and come up with physical items or multimedia that illustrate thier learning

Anchor
- First element
- The starting point of the project and engages the students' attention for the project. This often is used with a real-life scenairo.
- EX: Teacher asks a question: "How can we reduce plastic waste in our community?"
Task
- Second element
- The task component clearly defines the objectives and goals for the project and what the expected final outcome is supposed to be (presentation, report, physcial prototype, etc.)
- EX: Students will create a recycling awareness campaign presentation for the school.

Directions
- Third element
- Are the specific, step by step instructions and guidelines to comeplete the task
- EX: The teacher creates a directions sheet, checklist, or timeline for students to follow to complete the task.

Student Choices
- Fourth element
- Give students options to choose from on how they will complete the task
- EX: Video, digital poster, PowerPoint presentation, podcast, etc.

Student Inquiry
- Fifth element
- As the teacher, be the guide for students
- Let them ask questions and conduct research
- EX: For their task, in the recycling campagin example, they may ask "How much plastic and unrecyclable waste does our school produce everyday?"

Collaboration and Teamwork
- Sixth element
- Students collaborate and work in teams
- Students are assignesd roles (researcher, designer, presenter, leader, etc.)
- Emphasizes cooperation, communication, and teamwork skills
- EX: Teacher shows collaboration tools like Google Docs, Prezi, etc.

Teacher Coaching and Feedback
- Seventh element
- Teachers provide assistance and guidance
- Students are able to get help staying organized, learn how to work through issues, and polish their work.
- EX: Teacher walks around room guiding and giving feedback to students.

Student Reflection
- Eigth element
- Students' reflect on learning after completion of project
- Can write journal entries or create a short video reflecting on what they learned and what they could improve on next time
- EX: Teacher provides reflection questions (e.g. "What challenges did you face?", etc.)

Public Presentation
- Ninth element
- Students' present final work to an audience. This can be the class, parent, broader community, etc.
- EX: Students present recycling project to school.
