Remote Via Online
This can be a large remote model like a webinar, where there is a presenter, and the audience is logged in independently. There can also be smaller breakout sessions where the topics can be discussed. With the breakout groups there is more opportunity for audience involvement. This approach is effective for adult learners, allowing remote access to materials. Accessibility has improved for all, enabling many to engage fully with minimal guidance.There can also be a broad range of topics that can be covered at one time.
- Advantages: Accessibility for all staff and the wide variety of topics that can be covered. With asynchronous instructions it can be accessed anytime.
- Disadvantages: There can be less engagement of participants, technology/connection issues or the delivery model may not as enriching as in-person.
- Activities include: The lecture will be conducted in a large group format, utilizing a slide and video presentation. Participants will then be divided into breakout groups to engage in more focused discussions on specific topics, fostering increased interaction between the presenter and the audience.
Site Based Professional Development
- Advantages:The strategic plan model can be among the best when the leadership understands the facilitation processes of setting goals, obtaining buy-in by stakeholders, and building a community of learners.”(Fogarty & Pete, 2007)
- Disadvantages: Funding. Collaboration between schools may be needed to fund the method,. More hands are involved with the process and things can become muddied.
- Activites: Whole group collaboration, small group practice and coaching, goal development.
This is a localized method of professional development. It is site or school based and reflects the needs or aspirations of a specific school. It can involve the guiding principles of a district but becomes more specific.
This can be effective immediately because it is specific to a certain school. Teachers can implement changes quickly because it is based on their specific school. Teachers and staff are more likely to have buy-in and participate in the process.
Collegial Model
This relies on colleagues to coach and push each other. It utilizes group think for a shared goal or project. It also promotes bonding between colleagues and skill sharing between experts. This can be highly effective because its experts working with experts on a shared goal. Building relationships and trust toward a shared goal. Sharing the workload also helps promote bonding and support for each other. (Fogarty & Pete, 2007)
Activities: Peer observations and reflections, Co -teaching or presentations, teacher mentoring new teachers
- Advantages: When the team works well together, they can be effective, and produce a positive outcome. Professionals working with professionals toward a shared goal or project. Increase in participation between stakeholders.
- Disavantages: Not all teachers work well together. Sometimes the workload will not be shared appropriately. Staying focused and on tasks in a limited time can be difficult. The goals may be too narrowly focused and not apply to all participating.(Fogarty & Pete, 2007)
The Institute Day
One day presentation model “The Dog and Pony Show” Run by an expert or a team of experts. This model is not very effective. It is surface level and has little if any stakeholder input or participation.(Fogarty & Pete, 2007)
Advantages: It is a shorter session and teachers/staff are given extra time to prepare for the upcoming school year.
Disadvantages: Surface level. Does not inspire or gain buy-in from the group. Large area required to hold the entire group to receive the presentation.
The district is hiring an inspirational/motivational speaker to give a speech about education to build motivation for the upcoming school year.
District Wide Professional Development Plan
This model is a way for a district to introduce an innovation or method they want utitlized district wide which usually requires a multiday professional development. This could be a state funded program that the district would implement. This can be effective but needs buy-in from the district and commitment to the new innovation. It requires follow-up, practice, and coaching(Fogarty & Pete, 2007).
Advantages: This can lead to funding for a school for implementing the new method. With professional planning, the model can be effective and shift a districts student achievement rate positivly. Disadvantages: It can be difficult to implement throughout an entire district over just a few days. It requires multiple sessions with practice and coaching.
Activities include: In person at the school practicing with multiple sessions and peer to peer coaching.
