Asynchronous Learning
Asynchronous learning is done in your own time, without tutor’s supervision. You will be given a set of activities you must complete on the Learning Platform in preparation for your synchronous classes or as a follow-up to them. Though asynchronous studying is done independently, you will still be able to interact with your peers and your tutor through forums, chats and other collaborative activities on the platform. Your tutor may also ask you to complete independent study tasks that are not embedded on the platform. Effective asynchronous learning requires dedication, self-discipline and planning. You can utilise your time management skills on this programme by adding your self-scheduled asynchronous learning time into your student calendar alongside your synchronous classes.
Class Teaching
For the Online English Programme students will have a set Tutor who will guide them through their learning week-by-week.Class Teaching sessions will be led by the Tutor with the whole group of students in attendance.
Synchronous learning is done in real time with other students and your tutor. This learning takes place in an online classroom which you join through Teams software at the time specified in your timetable. When participating in a synchronous session keep in mind the following:
- Check your equipment before joining a synchronous class.
- Try to find a quiet place with no distractions; this will help you focus better and will any background noise to a minimum during the class.
- Be punctual. Aim to log in at least 5 minutes before your class is scheduled to start.
- If you cannot attend your synchronous session for any reason, make sure you notify your tutor by email.
- Have your microphone on mute when joining a live class and keep it muted unless you want to speak.
- Where possible, keep your webcam on. This is especially important in your seminar classes and live tutorials. Being able to see who you are talking to helps everyone engage more fully in live discussions and group activities.
- During whole-class sessions, your teacher will let you know if you should raise your hand or use the chat function to speak or ask a question.
Synchronous Learning
Seminar Group
From the whole cohort, students are then allocated into smaller Seminar Groups. In these Seminar Groups learning will be through discussion with the Tutor and the other students within the group, which is a vital academic skill and an opportunity to practice your English Language abilities.
