The Taj Mahal is an example of Indo-Islamic architecture built during the Mughal Empire's rule of India. The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan commissioned the project when one of his favorite wives Mumtaz Mahal (Jewel of the Palace) died (1631). It is one of the most famous and recornized buildings in the world and sets on 55.5 acres. The grounds include the mausoleum, gardens, tombs, waterworks, moonlight garden, and the small town of Taj Ganji.

Commodore Perry was sent to Japan by President Millard Fillmore in 1852 to accomplish two tasks. First, to negotiate the release of jailed sailors that had ship wrecked in the islands of Japan. Second, to open trade with Japan. Perry was put in command of four warships which included two steam frigates.
