Analyzing Characters' Motivations and Behaviors through the STEAL Method

Objective:

Students will independently use the STEAL method to analyze a character’s motivations and behaviors, understanding how these aspects influence events and the resolution of the conflict in a text.

STEAL Method Review

Use the STEAL method to analyze a character from a story, novel, or passage you’ve read in class. STEAL stands for: S: Speech – What does the character say? How do they speak? T: Thoughts – What do we learn about the character through their internal thoughts? E: Effect on Others – How do other characters react to them? How do they influence others? A: Actions – What does the character do? How do their actions reflect their personality? L: Looks – How is the character physically described, and what does this reveal?
