Mona Burgin

Auckland, New Zealand

Mona established the 1st troop in Auckland which turned 100 in 2021 and it is still going strong! In 1932 she went to the UK to gain guiding experience and qualifications and then came back to NZ to start a ranger group in 1939. In the 1950s Mona wrote the 1st handbook for guides and rangers with NZ variations. Currently, there is a Mona Burgin Scholarship to help adult leaders attend overseas events or training.

Every World Thinking Day, her ranger unit climbs Mangawhau (Mt Eden) while it is dark, sets up a little campfire. As the sun rises they raise their world flags and sing the world song. They are some of the first people to celebrate World Thinking Day!

Kathy Phelps

Venezuela

Kathy was a conservationist born in Australia but moved to Venezuela where she spent the rest of her life there.She participated in several expeditions to investigate the animals and plants of Venezuela, writing several books about her experiences.Alongside Carmen de Phister, she founded the Association of Girl Scouts of Venezuela in 1958.

Kathy was a member for nine years of Our Cabaña World Centre in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Roberta Bondar

Canada

Roberta was Canada's first woman astronaut, and took Girl Guide cookies with her! In the picture, you can see her juggling these cookies in space! She was a Girl Guide as a child and credited guiding as teaching her many valuable life skills.

As a Guide, she earned her astronomy badge!
