The Building Blocks of Math
Presenter notes: The new framework out since 2023 serves as a set of guildlines or standards that outline the essential skills.
The new mathematical framework is a set of guidelines or standards that outline the skills and behaviors of practical mathematicians. This framework provides strategies to enhance math learning across all students (Mazzeo et al., 2024). It provides a blueprint for teaching math, emphasizing critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication.
What is the New Mathematical Framework?
Recently, California has recognized the need to develop new approaches for enhancing math education (California Department of Education, 2013).
Presenter notes: The new framework comprises guidelines for effective learning, critical thinking, and collaboration.
Effective Learning
The framework helps students deeply understand mathematical concepts beyond rote memorization.
Critical Thinking
The framework encourages students to analyze information, evaluate arguments, and make informed decisions by promoting critical thinking.
Collaboration
The framework can encourage collaborative learning, where students work together to solve problems and share their insights.
Purpose of new Framework
Presenter notes: CGI is a method for improving understanding of math, enhancing problem-solving skills, and developing communication abilities.
Ways to impliment in the classroom
Cognitive Guided Instruction
CGI is an instructional method that aligns with contemporary educational frameworks by emphasizing student comprehension, problem-based learning, teacher facilitation, differentiated instruction, and mathematical discourse. It is a way to honor children's thinking(Carpenter et al., 2015)
"Students in CGI classrooms...Learn to see themselves capable; they know they can figure out how to solve problems, even problems that may be challenging at first." - Children's Mathematics
Presenter notes: Counting collections is one tool to help meet a variety of the framework standards
Counting collections is an organized activity in which children practice counting objects. They can use various strategies, such as counting one by one or skip counting. After counting, they write down the method they used. While the students work, the teacher observes their strategies, assists them in solving problems, and highlights effective approaches (Quan, 2024).

counting Collections
Presenter notes: Dot talks and notice and wonder are ways to open ended activities(Freitas, 2022).
Notice and Wonder is a teaching strategy that encourages students to actively engage with a text, image, or object by noticing details and then wondering about their significance(Freitas, 2022).
Notice and Wonder
A Dot Talk is a concise, visual presentation of a mathematical concept or problem. It often uses a single image or diagram to convey a complex idea or solution.

Ways to implement in the classroom
Presenter notes: Using supplies in your classroom or prining pictures can help support running an effective lesson on counting collections.
Students can utilize the math manipulatives that have been provided as district-wide supplies to begin implementing them in their classrooms.
Bears
Educators can obtain images of items and print them on paper for students to analyze and determine quantity.
Paper Copies
Educators can collect basic materials to initiate their collection counting process.

Presenter notes: CGI is one way to support the new framework by providing students with ways to solve real-world probems by using a variety of strategies.
Cognitive Guided Instruction (CGI) is an instructional approach that employs real-world problems to facilitate the development of students' mathematical reasoning (Garrison, 2023). Valuable resources include reference sheets for mathematical strategies and CGI-related problems. The book "Children's Mathematics, Second Edition: CGI" serves as an excellent resource for educators seeking to comprehend CGI and integrate these competencies into their teaching practices.
Cgi classroom Resources
Presenter notes: Dot Talks provide an engaging platform for students to collaborate and discuss their understanding of mathematical concepts while aligning with the mathematical framework.
Dot Talks Classroom Resources
Educators can utilize these dot-talk examples to enhance students' mathematical reasoning, communication skills, and problem-solving capabilities. Employing dot talks fosters diverse thinking and encourages multiple approaches. This may involve problems with various numerical solutions or tasks that permit a range of creative interpretations (Quan, 2024).

Presenter notes: Notice and wonder activities are a great way to promote engagement and show that everyones ideas are valuable(Freitas, 2022).

As part of the professional development on the new framework, it's important to incorporate opportunities for teachers to practice new strategies, receive ongoing support, and reflect on their learning. Here are some ideas: - Collaborative planning sessions - Coaching and mentoring - Access to online resources and communities

Let the communication flow!
With Genially templates, you can include visual resources to wow your audience. You can also highlight a particular sentence or piece of information so that it sticks in your audience’s minds, or even embed external content to surprise them: Whatever you like! Do you need more reasons to create dynamic content? No problem! 90% of the information we assimilate is received through sight and, what’s more, we retain 42% more information when the content moves.
- Generate experiences with your content.
- It’s got the Wow effect. Very Wow.
- Make sure your audience remembers the message.
