Introduction

In this module we are going to start to pull together the work we have done with standards and best practices to consider how to design instructional programming (curriculum). As you saw in the definition of curriculum there are 4 primary components of curriculum: 1. Goals - we have spent substantial time here, exploring how to anchor the identification of goals in the standards. 2. Methods - in the previous module we identified practices that we felt would be critical to incorporate into quality instruction 3. Materials - THIS IS WHERE WE WILL FOCUS THIS WEEK, LEARNING ABOUT WHAT PROCESSES CAN BE USED TO IDENTIFY MATERIALS 4. Assessment - This is where we are headed!

Adopting Program Materials

Developing Program Materials

Materials

Take some time to become familiar with the processes, tools, and resources for the two pathways to establishing instructional materials. You will be asked to identify situations or settings where you would choose to adopt program materials, and the situations or settings where you would develop them materials.

EdReports

Watch the video to learn more about EdReports and the purpose that the reports can serve when considering new program materials. Ed Reports provides a clearinghouse of completed program reviews.

iMet

The Instructional Materials Evaluation Tools (iMet Tools) from Achieve the Core provide a critial lens through which teachers can conduct their own review of program materials. These tools can sometimes be lengthy, but are very comprehensive. The iMet tools are for ELA and Math, and the eQuiP rubric is the parallel tool for reviewing science materials.

Backward Design

Grant Wiggins is well known for authoring mulitple resources outlining the backward design process. Review these Vanderbilt Resources.

Reflect

Compare and contrast the two lesson plans. Which aspects of the curriculum (goals, methods, materials, assessment) were strengthened by using backward design to develop the unit?
