Permian Period

299-251 million years ago

Pangea

There was one single massive continent. As well as the massive Panthalassa ocean to the left. There were lots of reptiles, cephalopods and gastropods.

Permian Extinciton

There was a mass extincion event that was thought to have taken out around 3/4 of all marine species. It was thought to have taken 200 million years which is very fast in the grand scheme.

The extinction event that occoured durring the Permian Period is thought to be the most devistating in the last 600 million years.

Only around 30% of land vertibrates survived though the extinction into the Triassic Period

The extinction is thought to be caused by volcanic activity in modern Siberia that caused an extreme warming of the earth's climate
