  • the Alps were formed during this period.
  • The earliest discovered bird fossils, belonging to the Archaeopteryx, were found in Germany
  • the Jurassic Period was named after the Jura mountains that run along the border of France and Switzerland
  • Butterflies first appeared during the Jurassic Period

Fun Facts

The jurassic period was the time of significant change in the structural geography of land, marked by the split of Pangaea.

Major Events

The Jurassic Period was set off by one of the largest mass extinction events after the Triassic Period. More than half of all marine life went extinct but it led to more complex lifeforms to evolve.

The World Breaks Apart

Pangaea's separation was the first major event of the Jurassic Period. It split into two major landmasses, Laurasia to the north and Gondwana to the south. Throughout the period, further splitting resulted in significant deposits of sediments along the new seafloor.

  • Large salt deposits from this period are still harvested today.
  • Mountain ranges reached new heights due to the sediment deposits.

What was the world like

Fossil records indicate that global temperatures were higher overall, most likely due to increased volcanic activity.

  • Major increase in aquatic life with more complex biology
  • Large amounts of carbon dioxide led to higher temperatures
  • The earliest bird fossils were discovered during this period.
