• It is theorized that the asteroid that formed the Chicxulub crater caused a rapid cooling of the climate, as well as a drop in oxygen that led to the extinction of most animals in this era and paved the way for mammals (1)
• The Atlantic Ocean began forming in the Jurassic Period (1)
• "Multituberculates, which were smaller to but distinct from rodents" have the most extensive fossil record of any mammal and have no living representatives in the modern world (1)
• Data on mammals from the Mesozoic is very sparse, and complete specimens are rare and only "are known for a few taxa" (2)
• The Cretaceous was dominated by flying reptiles (pterosaurs), with some having as large as a 35 foot wingspan! (1)

Triassic Period

• The "Permian-Triassic extinction event" and the "Triassic-Jurassic extinction event" make up the boundaries of this period (1)
• The Triassic was "hot and dry, with no ice at the poles" and was an important developemental time for tetrapods (1)
• The late Triassic is when the first stem mammals began to diversify as well (2)
