  • The first flying reptiles, known as pterosaurs, appeared during the Jurassic period, this included species like the Pteranodon who could have wingspans reaching up to 33 feet.
  • The Jurassic is known as the "Age of Dinosaurs," because many well known species like Stegosaurus and Allosaurus lived during this time.
  • The T-rex was not alive during the Jurassic Period.
  • This period introduced giant sauropods, such as Brachiosaurus and Diplodocus, which could reach lengths of over 80 feet and weighed up to 100 tons.

EVENTS

  • Continental Drift - During the Jurassic Period the supercontinent known as pangea began to diverge and began the creation of modern day north america and eurasia. This drifting also led to the creation of new oceans and big changes to the habitats of existing species.
  • Oceanic Anoxic Event - This event that occurred in the Early Jurassic Period was a global episode of ocean acidification, oxygen depletion, and high global temperatures. These factors led to a mass extinction of many marine species.

The Jurassic Period is known for its diversity of life and important evolutionary developments. Its very warm climate and ecosystems created a foundation for evolutionary change in the Mesozoic Era which later led into the Cretaceous Period. The relationships among plants, dinosaurs, and other organisms was very important in forming the diverse life of todays earth.
