ADDIE Instructional Design Model

It promotes consistency and quality by providing instructional designers with a structured, iterative framework. This model ensures a comprehensive and organized approach to creating effective learning experiences.
A Structured Approach to Effective Learning Design ADDIE stands for Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation—five essential steps to creating high-quality training—a systematic instructional design model.

Key Tasks:

  • Identify learner needs, gaps in knowledge, and training objectives.
  • Conduct audience analysis (demographics, learning styles).
  • Define measurable goals for the training.
  • Collect data using surveys, interviews, or focus groups to deeply understand the problem before proceeding.
Ask yourself: What is the real issue that this training should solve?

Key Tasks:

  • Create learning objectives (what learners need to achieve by the end of the course).
  • Plan assessments that align with the learning objectives.
  • Develop the structure and content outline for the training.
Backward Design:Begin with the end goal in mind: What should learners be able to do by the end of the training? Build your course backward from those outcomes.Storyboarding:
  • Use a storyboard to visually map out the sequence of learning activities and assessments. This ensures smooth content flow and interaction design.
  • Storyboards should detail the content, visuals, media, and interactions for each learning segment.

Key Tasks:

  • Launch the training course to the target learners.
  • Set up the course on a learning management system (LMS) or other delivery platforms.
  • Ensure a smooth learner experience by testing the course on various devices and browsers.
  • Conduct pilot testing or a soft launch to gather initial feedback before full deployment.
  • Prepare technical support or FAQs to address any issues learners might face.

Key Tasks:

  • Evaluate the course's effectiveness through learner feedback, performance data, and assessments.
  • Use evaluation models to measure how well the training met its objectives.
  • Make improvements based on the data gathered to refine future iterations.
  • Don’t wait until the end to evaluate—use formative evaluations during development and summative evaluations post-implementation.

Key Tasks:

  • Build out the actual content based on the design blueprint (develop eLearning modules, activities, media assets).
  • Ensure that all content aligns with the learning objectives and follows the storyboard.
  • Test content to ensure it’s functional, accurate, and engaging.
  • Stick closely to the storyboard to maintain structure and avoid drifting from the original goals.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) for content accuracy.
