- The oxygen catastrophe start is marked by red bands in strata from newly rusted iron in rocks
- The first formation of continents started during this era
- There were 450 days in a year, which means about 20 hours a day
- Red oceans are possible because of the amount of rust from oxygen
The Facts:
Cyanobacteria evolved during this time and caused a mass extinction event called the "oxygen catastrophe" through their photosynthesis. The oxygen that was produced killed off many anerobic bacteria. Prior to this, the atmosphere was mostly carbon dioxide. The death of so many anerobic bacteria led to a rise in "crown" eukaryotes. These were the ancestors for all current eukaryotes.
