Fernando Pessoa apresenta o processo de fingimento artístico como base da sua arte poética. Ao defender que um poema é um produto intelectual, o poeta expõe o seu conceito de poesia, enquanto intelectualização da emoção. Este processo caracteriza-se pela construção de sentidos que o labor poético implica, apartir de sentimentos criados ou recriados. Assim, a sinceridade artística mais não é do que um fingimento, uma transfiguração da emoção. Nos poemas que abordam esta temática "Isto" e "Autopsicografia", o verbo fingir não significa mentir, significa modelar, transformar. Por isso, "o poeta é um fingidor" e elabora conceitos que exprimem emoções.
