The Mesozoic Era (Middle Life)
The Mesozoic Era (a.k.a "Middle Life") took place during the Phanerozoic Eon . It stared around 251.9 million years ago and ended about 66 million years ago (MYA), which is about 185.9 million years in total. This era can be further divided into three periods, those being the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods. The Triassic Period lasted from around 251.9 to 201.3 MYA, the Jurassic Period lasted from about 201.3 to 145 MYA, and the Cretaceous Period lasted from around 145 to 66 MYA. Nicknamed the "Age of Reptlies," during this time, species like crocodiles and dinosaurs dominated Earth as a result of Pangaea separating into multiple continents. Additionally, large marine reptiles, such as ichthyosaurs and ammonites, thrived in the water. This can be attributed to rapid changes in plate tectonics, which resulted in shallow ocean basins and rising sea levels world-wide.

As was mentioned in the general info section, during the Mesozoic Era, Pangaea began separating into what are now the 7 modern continents. Also during this time, the climate changed, and plate tectonics began to rapidly change as well. This, as mentioned before, resulted in rising sea levels and shallow ocean basins world-wide. The event that would eventually bring this era to an end is known as the "Cretaceous-Palogene (or K-Pg) Event"," where a massive asteroid would strike Earth and create a vicious cold snap around the planet. This event was marked by a thin layer of sediment called the "K-Pg Boundary," which shows high levels of iridium, a type of metal found abundantly in asteroids but rarely on Earth. The victims of this extinction were some of the biggest reptiles of the sky, sea, and land.

The Mesozoic Era (Middle Life)

- In the Canadian Arctic Islands, Mesozoic strata are very widespread. The Sverdrup Basin contains the thickest and most complete Mesozoic succession in this region.
- At the end of the Mesozoic Era, despite many animals going extinct due to the K-Pg Event, birds were able to survive, making them the last surviving lineage of the dinosaurs.
- Some common fossils from the Mesozoic Era are diverse plant fossils, dinosaur bones, and teeth.
- The Mesozoic Era lasted 185.9 million years in total, which is only 4.1% of geological time.
