I trovieri provenivano dalla Francia Settentrionale a differenza dei trovatori che si trovavano nella Francia Meridionale.I trovieri verseggiavano in lingua d'oil su argomenti sia amorosi che epici.In Germania i poeti-musicisti,che componevano anch'essi in lingua volgare,si chiamavano Minnesinger.

IL CONTESTO STORICO DEI TROVIERI

L'arte dei trovieri fiorì durante il tragico periodo delle crociate.Proprio una di esse, quella spietata contro gli eretici albigesi (1208), rappresentò un colpo insanabile per la Provenza e per i trovieri, favorendo nella Francia del nord una fioritura artistica e analoga e quella provenzale.I poeti-musicisti della Francia settentrionale presero il nome di trouèves.La loro lingua detta d'oil da cui si sviluppò il francese moderno .Dei trovieri ci sono rimaste maggiori testimonianze musicali: i codici infatti contengono più di 2.000 composizioni di oltre 200 poeti e circa 800 melodie.

II codici hanno tramandato solo delle melodie;tuttavia dalle fonti iconografiche del tempo,soprattutto miniature,sappiamo che i canti dei trovatori e trovieri erano spesso accompagnati da strumenti,come piccole arpe o vielles

STILE MUSICALE

Le composizioni dei trovieri erano monodiche,cioè a una sola voce, a eccezione di quelle composte da Adam de la Halle.
