Observing and Gathering Evidence

Observation is the most frequently used method of gathering informationThe process of gathering evidence of children’s learning is also called documenting, and involves two kinds of decisions: (1) how to gather information about children, and (2) how to record the findings (McAfee & Leong, 2015).

Activity

For developing the assessment...
  • Reference multiple sources of evidence
  • Observe across settings
  • Increase the comfort of the child
  • Accommodate development
  • Engage children in authentic activities
Consider...
  • The nature of child development
  • Children's sensitivity to the context
  • The role of motivation
  • Gender Differences
  • Cognitive Development and Abilities
  • Emotional and Social Development
  • Approaches to learning
  • Physical Development
  • Biology (nature)
  • Environment (nurture)
  • Transactional theory
  • Risk Resilience
  • Protective factors
  1. To improve teaching and learning
  2. To identify children with special learning or developmental needs
- Screening - Diagnostic testing 3. Evaluate program quality

3. Dynamic assessmentBased on Vygotsky’s concept of the zone of proximal development, dynamic assessment analyzes a child’s performance not just in terms of what the child can do independently, as most assessment procedures require, but what the child can do with the assistance of a teacher or peer.

1. Observation

  • Curriculum-embedded
  • Play-based
2. Performance assessmentPerformance assessment, also known as authentic assessment, is used to determine what children know and can do from their demonstration of a skill or their creation of a product.

Definition of Assessment Assessment is the ongoing process of gathering evidence of a child's learning and learning to make decisions about planning and implementing instruction.

Teachers must not only give information to parents, they must get information from parents as well. Parents can provide insights about children’s behavior and capabilities outside the school or child care center.
