- The cenozoic era is the last era of the phanerozoic eon - This era followed the mesozoic era (age of reptiles), which ended with the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) Extinction event

this era was also home to the Sahelanthropus, a species of ape that is known to be the first primate to walk upright the Austrolopithecus is the first known hominin, and appeared in the fossil record around 4 million years ago
