- This era started 66 million years ago and continues to this day - The Sahelanthropus came about 7 million years ago
this era was also home to the Sahelanthropus, a species of ape that is known to be the first primate to walk upright the Austrolopithecus is the first known hominin, and appeared in the fossil record around 4 million years ago
