Types of Assessments
There are two major types of assessments:
Formative Assessments
Summative Assessments
- given at intermediate points in the learning process
- help students to practice, reflect, and improve as they are learning
- help instructors evaluate the effectiveness of course design
- have a smaller impact on the overall course grade
- may include multiple attempts
- given at the end of instructional units or courses to “sum up” student learning
- provide instructors insight into how well students have mastered the content
- have a larger impact on the overall course grade
- typically only one attempt allowed
