Types of Assessments

There are two major types of assessments:

Formative Assessments

Summative Assessments

• given at intermediate points in the learning process
• help students to practice, reflect, and improve as they are learning
• help instructors evaluate the effectiveness of course design
• have a smaller impact on the overall course grade
• may include multiple attempts

• given at the end of instructional units or courses to “sum up” student learning

• provide instructors insight into how well students have mastered the content
• have a larger impact on the overall course grade
• typically only one attempt allowed
