Another importance of connections, especially long term connections, is the formation of schema, or background knowledge. Foundational skills are often just that, foundations for future learning. Having background knowledge or a base level understanding of certain mathematical concepts can help the students understand more, especially as they progress from concrete to more abstract ideals.Students with exposure to future concepts/connections are better prepared to problem solve.
Math encourages students to problem solve. In order to effectively do so, students have to be able to connect different concepts together in order to determine which one is the most effective to use. In order to form mathematical connections, students first need to establish how to make connections. These connections will allow them to think out their problems.
Problem Solving
Growth mindset in students is vital to their success as it is the belief in persistence and that learning is always in a progressional state. Making connections in the classroom helps establish the growth mindset in the classroom. Students who have a fixed mindset often lose the sense of joy when solving math. Those who understand the importance of what they are learning are more persistent in their efforts to problem solve, even when presented with tasks that involve productive struggle.
Growth Mindset
Making connections with other individuals, often through classroom collaboration and discussion, allow for a better development of the student’s social skills. Students, especially those in elementary, are still learning how to speak to one another & what a constructive conservation looks like. While there is clear importance of mathematical concepts, developing the students' social emotional skills are a vital part of the learning process. Making connections also allows for more student buy-in, as the students are more engaged when they feel a personal connection or interest in the material.
