Research Question

Social Annotation Impact: SPCH 1321

Does social annotation impact / improve student understanding of the creation of effective visual aids?

According to Kalir and Garcia there is an exciting (and growing) relationship between annotation and generative learning. So, I expect my project will support this. But I'm excited to find out!

Audience

Social Annotation Impact: SPCH 1321

Need to do more specific research on my SPCH 1321 students, but anecdotally, the SPCH 1321 students are much like the holistic population of LSC-Kingwood. I have noticed a difference in my SPCH 1321 face-to-face students in this class (more non-traditional students, more veterans, more males) than the breakdown in my other classes. Perhaps due to the "Business" degree seekers.

Course Information

Social Annotation Impact: SPCH 1321
Implementing Social Annotation in one face to face and online class Fall 2024 for two activities.
  • Face to face class (TTh 9:30) of 23 students.
  • Online class (2801) of 23 students.
  • Comparing the second social annotation activity (visual aids) to the same activity that was completed without social annotation in the Spring 2024 by both a F2F and Online SPCH 1321 class.
  • Completed Syllabus annotations activity as a baseline understanding for the concept of social annotations and social annotation tool.
  • Visual Aid Lesson Annotation was completed during week 7 .

01

Observation: D2L does not currently have LMS integration with Perusall which limits by ability to easily pull data directly into D2L gradebooks.

Observation: The technological limitations, or perceived limitations, of some students has prevented them from trying the social annotation tools.

H1: Social annotation will positively impact student understanding of the creation of effective visual aids.

That's why disciplines like Visual Thinking make visually rich note-taking easier thanks to the use of images, graphs, infographics, and simple drawings.

Social beings
We are visual beings
Digital beings
Narrative beings

We need to interact with each other. We learn collaboratively.

We are able to understand images from millions of years ago, even from other cultures.

We avoid being part of the content saturation in the digital world.

We have thousands and thousands of stories. ⅔ of our conversations are stories.

Achieve convincing 67% of the audience. This is because visual language facilitates the rapid acquisition of knowledge in an intuitive way. Can it be said that images are the key to success? Clearly.

Haven't we convinced you yet to use graphics in your creations?

Well: there are studies that show that 50% of the brain is responsible for processing visual stimuli and that 42% more is retained when the content is animated.

Goals

04

Goals

A personal goal is to ease the connectivity of Perusall with D2L.

Students felt that Perusall and annotation was "separate from their "coursework" so I didn't receive as much buy-in. I think that when the technology is more closely integrated within D2L (single sign-on) it will alleviate some of the tech troubles.

Goals and Final Thoughts

Closing Remarks

Education technology tools are effective when given the time and space to explore how they work. Students have to be given the time and flexibility to explore the tools before an assessment is used with the tools.

Social Annotation is a remarkable tool that impacted student engagement and student success.

Eliminating the technology stumbling blocks helps students to get to the "main thing" before using up their time or will power. I will try to make it as easy as possible to use annotations in the future, as I saw the benefit, but also the frustrations that students experienced.

We don't like to bore. We don't want to be repetitive. Communicating in the same way always bores and doesn't engage. We do it differently. We sabotage boredom. We create what the brain enjoys consuming because it stimulates it.
