INTRODUCTION
A/AN/THE: We use a/an and the with singular countable nouns (a car, a book, the car, the book...)THE/NO ARTICLE: We use the or no article with plural or uncountable nouns (dogs, the dogs, water, the water...) CHECK THE FOLLOWING CASES:1. If the topic is new or we have already mentioned it. I read a great book last week. (= we haven't discussed this book before) What was the book about? (= the one we mentioned earlier) 2. If something is the only one Where are the car keys? (the only car keys we have) 3. If we are talking about things in general or in particular. Cats are clever animals. (= the animal in general) The cats are in the garden. (= our pets)
Other uses of A / AN:
- We use a/an to describe something or say what job someone has got:
That's a beautiful photo. He's a doctor.
- We use a/an in some frequency expressions:
I drink coffee once a week/three times a day.
Other uses OF "THE"
1. We use the before a noun that has a defining relative clause: I've just met the man who lives next door. (= one specific man) 2. We use the before superlatives: Kyoto is the most beautiful city in Japan. 3. We use the with certain countries, oceans, rivers or groups of islands: I went to the USA/the Pacific Ocean/the Amazon/the Bahamas. 4. We use the with some fixed expressions about time: all the time, most of thetime, at the same time. 5. We use the with places or seasons: in the countryside/city, in the summer. 6. We use the with free-time activities: go to the cinema/the gym, listen to the radio (but watch TV).
Other uses OF "no article"
- We use no article in phrases about meals:
I had breakfast/lunch/dinner at 7 am. NOT had a/the breakfast...
- We use no article in some fixed phrases about places:
I usually go home/go to bed/go to work/go to school/ at... o'clock.
- We use no article to talk about most countries, continents, cities, streets, etc... :
I went to China/Africa/America/Paris/Bond Street.
Tip
Don't use a/an with uncountable nouns. Instead, use no article or some We need to buy toothpaste and shampoo.
