You wake up after having nodded off on the subway. You haven’t been sleeping. Everytime you begin to drift off, the looming threat of failing your finals rips you back to reality. A stranger approaches you, what do you say?

(Say nothing and nod)

Um, stranger danger. Do you have a license to be this creepy, Creep-o?

“Hey kid? You like adventure?” asks the stranger. He introduces himself as Joseph Campbell, the author famous for popularizing the Hero’s Journey. His smug look is somewhat off putting.

Sounds neat!

Sorry, I don’t have cash on me… have a nice day!

Ew, the paper's Greasy...

He frowns, “I- I don’t need your money! I need your help!” He pulls out a piece of paper and hands it to you… "Listen! I-"

“Thank you!” he says earnestly, he pulls out a piece of paper and hands it to you…

What does this have the do with me?

“The Hero’s Journey is the fundamental framework for trillions of stories since antiquity. Everything from Harry Potter to Hunger Games uses the Hero’s Journey as a map creating stories from beginning to end.

Sounds narcissistic and besides, I have finals.

I wish I could! I have finals to do and I will perish if I fail.

It’s taught in high school english classes across the world BUT not enough people are aware of MY HERO’S JOURNEY! I need you to help me spread the word!

You BURNED MY WHAT?

Joseph Campbell scoffs, “Well, lucky for you… I burned your finals!” Now, what you just went through was the first three steps of the main six in the Hero’s Journey! Now, walk with me.

“Don't you just love the fresh air- no? Still hung up on the burnt finals thing? In any case, take a look at your paper! You just went through step one which is the Normal World. For Katniss that was the time spent before she was called to compete in the Hunger Games… for you it was finals, exhaustion, and strange men on subways.”

Wow, that’s like super cool how that’s all connected…

“Sure it does, Buddy. Step two is the Call to Adventure which goes with the Refusal of the Call. I came and spoke to you, and that was your call. The Refusal of the Call is generally less fun. Luke Skywalker’s Aunt and Uncle getting murdered by the Empire and your Finals biting the dust, making it so both of you have no choice but to adventure are textbook examples…”

Wait... the next bit says "Crossing the Threshold". Are we going somewhere?

"You're right... my genius is cool. Thank you for eventually noticing."

All Joseph Campbell says is, “So glad you asked.” It all happens so fast that you’re not entirely sure what you saw. In one breath you are standing on sidewalk and in the next you find yourself hurtling through a wormhole to whatever unknown horrors, the creator of the literary staple, Hero’s Journey decides to subject you to next.

Soon you hear him, he’s further down than you and seems to be having more trouble getting his bearings than you are. You hear, “Crossing the Threshold is when the HErOoo- oh GOSH! It’s when the hero leaves their familiar world and enters the new one! It doesn’t always have to be a literal new world and it’s UsUally just a big change from their norm.”

I’m gonna hurl… torturous?!

"Great! Okay! I am not woozy… I- I am fine! Welcome to the fifth part of the Hero’s Journey and personally my favorite bit because how torturous it is!"

Joseph Campbell does his own drum roll, "The fifth step is... TRIALS! This part tests the hero’s resolve. Through tests and hardship, it proves to the audience that the hero deserves everything from a level up to their prize at the end of the story. I cannot wait for you to see what I have in store for you. It’s truly one of the most difficult trials I have cooked up to date… "

The Return! After the adventure is had, the hero must always return home, stronger and wiser than when they set out... that's why the paper you had earlier is in a circle. The Hero's Journey is a cycle.
